Removal of Antibiotics and Nutrients by Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) from a Plug Flow Reactor Based Constructed Wetland Model

چکیده

Overuse of antibiotics has resulted in widespread contamination the environment and triggered antibiotic resistance pathogenic bacteria. Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not equipped to remove antibiotics. Effluents from WWTPs usually primary source aquatic environments. There is an urgent need for cost-effective, environment-friendly technologies address this issue. Along with antibiotics, nutrients (nitrogen phosphorus) also present conventional WWTP effluents at high concentrations, causing environmental problems like eutrophication. In study, we tested vetiver grass a plug flow reactor-based constructed wetland model greenhouse setup removing ciprofloxacin (CIP) tetracycline (TTC), nutrients, N P, secondary effluent. The was designed based on previous batch reaction kinetics study reached steady-state 7 days. measured concentrations were generally consistent modeling predictions using first-order kinetics. Vetiver significantly (p < 0.05) removed 93% 97% CIP TTC (initial 10 mg/L), simultaneously 84% nitrogen phosphorus, respectively. Results show that wetlands could be viable green technology removal wastewater.

Nutritional and Antinutritional Components of Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides L. Roberty) at Different Stages of Growth

Vetiver grass was harvested at 4, 6 and 8-week old re-growth. The chemical composition and quantitative analyses of anti-nutritional components were determined. The result showed that dry matter and fiber content increased with age while crude protein, mineral content and anti-nutritional components reduced with age. It was concluded that age of re-growth significantly affect the nutrient and a...

Nutrients and Organic Matter Removal in a Vertical-Flow Constructed Wetland

Constructed wetlands are promising engineering technique that reproduce the conditions of the natural wetlands [1]. They have high water treatment capacity because of the intensive “work” of the plants and the microorganisms. Depending on the conditions various types of plants are growing: common reed (Phragmites australis), rush (Typha latifolia), iris, etc. (Fig. 1). These plants are stable t...
